Erin became a Category 3 hurricane in the Caribbean early Saturday and is expected to strengthen further during the day, the National Hurricane Center reported.

Coastal flooding, particularly along North Carolina's Outer Banks, is expected to begin Tuesday and peak Wednesday into Thursday, with portions of highway at risk of ocean overwash.

“It looks like it's going to stay offshore through its entire lifetime, but because it's so large in size, it is going to be bringing impacts,” says Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather’s lead hurricane expert....

Hurricane Erin has intensified into a Category 5 storm, positioned approximately 160 miles north of Anguilla.

While Erin's maximum winds diminished, the storm's overall size grew and forecasters issued tropical storm warnings for the Turks and Caicos Islands and a watch for the southeast Bahamas.
