Hurricane Melissa strengthens to Category 5, expected to make landfall in Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane early Monday, before its expected landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Melissa now has maximum sustained winds of 160 mph with some higher gusts, and some strengthening is possible ahead of making landfall, Fox Weather reported.
Hurricane Melissa is the 13th named storm of the 2025 season and may become the strongest storm to make landfall this year.
The authorities fear that Melissa, which has already been blamed for the deaths of four people on the island of Hispaniola, could become the strongest hurricane ever to hit Jamaica. The Jamaican government has ordered evacuations for parts of the capital, Kingston, and the entire island has been classed as "threatened".
