The Mavericks have agreed to a 2-year, $13 million contract with D'Angelo Russell in NBA free agency to serve as Kyrie Irving's backup.

It’s no surprise Powell intends to return to the franchise he joined in 2014, his rookie year. As a Mavericks fixture the last 11 years, he has witnessed the twilight of Dirk Nowitzki’s career and the dynamic 6 1/2 seasons of the Doncic era. Powell will potentially enter a new era in franchise history if Dallas drafts Flagg on Wednesday night.

The new contract will align Irving with co-star Anthony Davis, who joined the Mavericks in the seismic trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February.
