Apple has always been eager to dump technologies when the company feels they have outlived their usefulness. The original iMac came without a floppy drive. The iPhone 7 came without a headphone jack.
Well, according to news.com, Apple has "pulled a DMCA" on OWC and they have pulled their product as a result. Bummer. I was going to get a iMac sans Superdrive and add an external DVD burner later.
