Trump signs order to put IndyCar race on Washington DC’s National Mall
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing federal agencies to stage an IndyCar street race on and around Washington DC’s National Mall, turning one of the country’s most symbolically charged civic spaces into a temporary high speed circuit.
MAGA Transport Secretary Sean Duffy reportedly wants to transform the National Mall into a race track to mark America’s 250th birthday. The IndyCar course would apparently feature a complete loop around the National Mall,
“The Grand Prix is an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate our nation's proud racing pedigree, showcase the beauty of the National Mall, and generate millions in critical tourism revenue for the Capital,” a statement to NBC News said.
The president wants a race in D.C. to help America celebrate its 250th birthday, but the challenges to bring it about are massive.
In 2026, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is celebrating all things American bison. Through a series of new exhibitions, displays and programming, the national mammal will take center stage on the National Mall to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
