A 19-year-old pilot from the United States has been detained on an Antarctic island and charged by Chilean authorities, who say his flight to the frozen continent was unauthorized.

Ethan Guo, 19, had been documenting his attempt to fly solo to all seven continents on social media. He is no longer in custody but has no easy way to leave an island off Antarctica’s coast.

Guo had planned to fly only over the city of Punta Arenas in southern Chile, but instead flew further south to King George Island.
