Rubio directs diplomats to return to using Times New Roman, undoing Biden-era switch to Calibri
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has directed the State Department to go back to using Times New Roman typeface as the standard for official papers, a spokesperson told CNN, in a reversal of the previous administration’s update to the sans-serif Calibri.
Calibri was adopted in lieu of Times New Roman as the official typeface of the State Department two years ago, under the Joseph Biden administration, in an effort to make written communication more accessible to people with learning disabilities and visual impairments.
When people read, they simultaneously process what the typeface looks like: this, in turn, can change how they think about what they are reading. Generally, it is easier to read words that are shown in a typeface that has a personality that matches the words’ meaning.
The Calibri typeface has become the latest unexpected flashpoint inside the U.S. State Department, after Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered staff to stop using the sans-serif font and return to Times New Roman.
