OAKLAND, Calif. - The National Weather Service issued a tsunami advisory for the California coast Tuesday night following a series of large earthquakes in Russia. The tsunami advisory is in effect from the British Columbia-Alaska border to the California-Mexico border.

LOS ANGELES - A tsunami generated by a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula reached the California coast early Wednesday, prompting urgent warnings from emergency officials and the National Weather Service as surges began appearing along the shoreline.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Bay Area and other coastal areas of California are under a tsunami watch following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake in Russia’s Far East, the National Weather Service said. The watch also extends to coastal area of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.
