The Indian Navy on Sunday moved out two more warships for Yangon city of Myanmar carrying a major relief material onboard. The Indian Army also expanded its operations closer towards the areas affected by the devastation of the March 28 earthquake.

Officials are continuing to survey the destruction left in two major Myanmar cities and the Thai capital Bangkok, after a powerful earthquake hit the region Friday.

B ANGKOK — The death toll from a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar jumped to more than 1,000 on Saturday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of the scores of buildings that collapsed when it struck near the country's second-largest city.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said that India has been the first responder whenever any calamity strikes any neighbouring country. He underscored India's role when Cyclone Yagi struck Myanmar.

The quake's effects extended as far as Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand, where six people were confirmed dead, 22 were injured, and 101 remain missing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and said, “India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour.”
