When the Bruins have been at their best lately, they’ve played a simple, defensive game and done their best not to beat themselves. They got the first part right in Manhattan on Wednesday, but not the second part.

McAvoy scored a goal on four shots in Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Wild. McAvoy has the opening goal in each of the Bruins' last two games, and his tally Tuesday was the game-winner as well. The 27-year-old defenseman has added 10 shots on net and a minus-1 rating since returning from an upper-body injury that cost him seven contests.

The Boston Bruins had a golden chance to take the lead late in the game against the New York Rangers. With the score tied 2-2, all Boston had to do was capitalize on a gift of a power play after Matt Rempe was called for holding on Pavel Zacha.

Marc-Andre Fleury had 32 saves for the Wild, who swept the Bruins in both meetings last season but could not get anything past Swayman on Tuesday. Minnesota was shut out for the second straight game.
