President Donald Trump on Tuesday pivoted — once again — to illegal immigration by touring a new Florida detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” as his poll numbers on his signature issue have sunk and congressional Democrats continue slamming his mass deportation program.

The new immigration detention center at an isolated airstrip in the Florida Everglades that President Donald Trump visited was heralded by Republicans as a potential model for other states to aggressively ramp up detention and deportation efforts.

President Donald Trump on July 1 toured the 5,000-bed immigration detention center being built on 39 square miles in Miami-Dade.
