Forecasters are watching a new tropical system that may form behind Hurricane Erin, which is intensifying again Monday. Tropical storm and storm surge watches were issued for the North Carolina

Hurricane Erin, now classified as a major hurricane, is under close observation by Hurricane Hunters. The storm’s wind field has grown to about 400 miles with tropical storm-force winds.

As Hurricane Erin tracks northward in the Atlantic, its broad wind field is expected to churn up rough seas and dangerous rip currents along Florida’s east coast this week, forecasters and county officials warned.

This wave is so new that the hurricane center has yet to dub it an “invest,” a technical term that kicks off heightened scrutiny and allows global hurricane models to pick up the system and begin issuing estimated forecast tracks.
