In 1838, Samuel Rowbotham, an English writer and early flat Earth theorist, conducted an experiment on a straight, six-mile stretch of the Old Bedford River (a canal in Cambridgeshire). He placed a telescope 8 inches above the water and observed a boat with a flag also about 5 feet high as it rowed away along the canal.
