In the 1960s, Hornbæk Beach was already a beloved summer escape for Copenhageners. Families would pile into cars—or take the train up north—armed with picnic baskets, blankets, and high hopes for a rare full day of sunshine. The beach, with its wide stretch of fine sand and gentle dunes, felt like a slice of Danish paradise. Bathing huts dotted the shoreline, kids built sandcastles or braved the chilly waves, and parents relaxed with thermoses of coffee and newspapers flapping in the sea breeze.
