John Calhoun Chamberlain was born in Brewer, Maine on August 1, 1838, ten years younger than his brother Joshua. He graduated from Bowdoin College and studied at Bangor Theological Seminary. Sick with tuberculosis in 1859, John couldn’t enlist in the Civil War, but in 1863 he joined the U.S. Christian Commission while visiting his brothers in the 20th Maine Infantry.
