History at Antietam Aqueduct on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Washington County Maryland. This beautiful 140 ft, three arch stone structure is one of 11 such aqueducts on the canal. In July of 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early damaged the aqueduct to impede boat traffic. Mostly significantly, the stone berm wall seen here had been ripped out. The structure was built in 1834 of limestone from a quarry just to the east in Antietam, Washington County Maryland. | Metrotrails
