The Ainu, indigenous people from northern Japan, raised bear cubs as a sign of honor. Known as Iyomante, the bear-sending ceremony involved nurturing a bear cub for one or two years within the community. Treated with affection and care, the bear was regarded as a kamui, a divine spirit who brought gifts of fur and meat.
