Are you working with a highly aroused dog? Let’s clear up a common myth… 💡 Stillness creates calmness and movement creates arousal. 💡 Sounds logical, right? But it’s not always true. In fact, the opposite can often be the case! Movement—when done with purpose and clarity—can actually help a dog decompress, while forcing stillness without addressing the root cause can add frustration and make the problem worse. The key isn’t about stopping your dog but teaching them how to channel their energy.

❓ Ever seen a dog react way bigger than expected and thought, “Where did that come from?” 🐶 That moment when your dog’s emotions feel bigger than anything else happening around them. 🐾 I’m sharing what’s really going on when dogs get over-aroused or over excited. What influences those big emotional responses? Why do some dogs react more than others? And how can we better support them without accidentally adding to the overwhelm. ❣️ Understanding this can shift how we see our dogs and give us c

Is your dog so aroused by your movement that they can’t focus on agility? 🏃♀️🐕 Often this looks like… - knocked bars - Dog running around obstacles - Running past or popping out of weaves - Dog barking at you or spinning If this is you, we have an exercise for you to try! 👉 Run with your dog behind you 🏃♀️ Drop a reward and keep running 🐕 See if your dog stops to get the reward. When a dog becomes aroused, it can be really difficult for them to make good decisions, so it’s important that we learn how to work with them during these moments. Some of the ways we can work through arousal is making sure we provide our dogs with mental stimulation, physical exercise, and training. It’s important we incooperate impulse control activities into our dog’s training. But one of the most important things that we can do for our dogs that become easily aroused is to give them outlets t

Many humans will get their dog highly aroused before and during the leashing process. Repeating this process over and over, it will build up to a strong association of leashing = go nuts. In other words, we practiced leashing = craziness with our dog. If you want your dog to go crazy when you pick up the leash, feel free to do so. I'm not telling you what to do. I just wouldn't expect them to calmly follow you on the walk after creating an association that leashing = go crazy.

When a dog gets triggered to get aroused/excited by something, many humans make the error of getting excited WITH the dog. If you think about it, everything is calm, at least it should be in everyday life, and then something triggers the dog to to highly aroused, for instance the doorbell ringing. If you start also get excited and start yelling, you are just joining in that excited energy which will only make things worse. Your dog will take it as you are in agreement with the response of excite

I see so many humans petting highly aroused or anxious dogs in an attempt to calm them down. Not only does it not calm them down, it can easily create even more arousal or anxiety. On top of that, by nurturing that state in your intimate space, you are sending the message that you want to connect to that animal through arousal/anxiety and that you agree with that state of mind. This trainer is obviously making a funny video showing that people who think you can be soft and pet an arouse

If your dog is struggling with arousal before the walk, don’t just rush into the walk. This video was taken last week from when spooky first got dropped off, and his adrenaline was through the roof. He was constantly on alert and gunning for that front door when he knew it was time to go outside. One simple protocol you can do is use your body to claim space around the door or any area of the house that the dog is hyper aroused around. Notice how much space he ends up creating between himself an
