The Atlantic Sharpnose shark is relatively small compared to other sharks with an average length between 3.5-4 feet long. You can tell they are Atlantic Sharpnose by their black edges on the dorsal and caudal fins. We found 2 playing around the reef on our dives this week at Buck Island. We're thrilled to share our first publication of 2019 - and this is a cool one! Last year, we began studying deep-water shark communities in the Bahamas with our collaborator Dr. Brennan Phillips from the University of Rhode Island. Exploring the depths of the Tongue of the Ocean, we discovered a sharpnose sevengill shark, at around 2500ft! These are the first ever recorded behaviors of this species in the wild, and the first record of it in this locality! There is so much to be discovered yet.
