The gum was introduced by the American Chicle Company in 1900, inspired by "chicle," a natural sticky sap used by ancient Mesoamericans. Thomas Adams, a resourceful inventor, decided to experiment with chicle after meeting Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who introduced him to the sap. From that small experiment, Adams developed the first chewing gum, eventually crafting Chiclets with its iconic
