Missed by many, on the North bank of the Thames, in the City of London, you’ll find a surviving Anglo-Saxon inlet. It is called Queenhithe, established by Alfred the Great in the 9th century. It was later named after Queen Matilda, wife of Henry I. It was once London’s primary port for foodstuffs such as grain and fish in the medieval period. This little alleyway right by Charing Cross Station used to have the unusual name ‘Of Alley’… 🤔 Why? Well, the answer takes us back over 700 years. This stretch of the river into the late 17th century was lined with the mansions and palaces of the rich and wealthy. Next to where Charing Cross is today was the site of York House.
